After the oil seal is positioned in the groove, apply even pressure to the oil seal using a seal driver or a similar tool. This will help to seat the oil seal firmly in the groove and prevent it from moving during use. Make sure to apply the pressure evenly and gently, as applying too much force can damage the oil seal or cause it to deform.

2. Use the correct lubricant

Take extra care with a light alloy block or head. It is vital to avoid scratching the machined surface.

In this kind of seal, wider tolerances are possible between the OD of the seal and the seal housing. Irregularities of the housing surface can be taken up by the resilient rubber layer on the outside of the seal. However, the rubber covered seal can be blown out under high pressure in a reciprocating application whereas, with a metal case, there is no such danger.

Oil seals, also known as rotary shaft seals or lip seals, are a specific type of gasket designed to prevent the leakage of oil or other fluids in rotating shafts. 

The square shape of the gasket allows for a more precise fit in square or rectangular openings, ensuring a tight seal to prevent fluids or gases from escaping. Made from high-quality rubber materials such as neoprene, silicone, or EPDM, these gaskets offer excellent resistance to temperature, pressure, and chemical exposure.

Reconnect the battery . Start the engine and check carefully for oil or fuel leaks.

The design and material of a shaft oil seal are crucial factors in determining its effectiveness and durability. They are also designed to maintain a tight seal against the shaft while allowing for smooth rotation without excessive friction or wear.

Insert a tyre lever or large screwdriver into the starter aperture so that it jams in the teeth of the ring gear on the flywheel .

The simplest way is to know either the preferred manufacturers part number, the overall sizes of shaft diameter, housing diameter and bore depth.Many of the old traditional names of seal manufacturers have either changed or disappeared in this age of “acquisitions”.
